One of the biggest events in South Africa’s coal mining sector this year is the sale of South32’s South African Energy Coal (SAEC), a division of the Perth-headquartered company that produces about 28 million tonnes a year (Mt/y) of thermal coal of which approximately half is sold to Eskom.

Coal is unfashionable but Exxaro has lots of it and the low-carbon economy is not going to happen overnight.

According to projections, South Africa will need to generate energy from coal until at least 2040, says Vuslat Bayoglu, managing director and co-founder of SA-focused mining investment business Menar Capital.

Cape Town – Although the world is switching to renewable energy there is still a big demand for coal around the globe.
